     [Before Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera formed the television cartoon
      company which bears their name, they worked as young men for
      Fred Quimby at MGM which originated the series of theatrical
      cartoons featuring a cat named Tom and a mouse named Jerry;

      Hanna and Barbera were the animators who made their reputation
      on these witty fast-paced cartoons; after the duo left to form
      their own company, they sub-contracted with MGM to continue
      working on the cartoons which, during the 1950s, were sold by
      MGM in packages offered for use on television stations;

      From 1960 - 1964, MGM subcontracted a number of "Tom and Jerry"
      theatrical cartoons out to U.S. expatriate animators in Europe --
      specifically in Prague, Czechoslovakia; During the hippie days
      of the 1960s these same animators tried to capitalize on
      interest of young audiences in avant-garde cartoon movies (such
      as "Lord Of The Rings") and produced a 1962 movie called
      "The Tom and Jerry Cartoon Kit"; the result was described as
      "strange" and "creepy"; it flopped at the box office;

      In the MGM theatrical cartoons, the cat character named Tom
      never spoke a word; that was to change when CBS brought the
      cartoons to television; Although other cartoon characters
      such as Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny are often thought to be
      long-running, Tom and Jerry have enjoyed a very long run
      on television with many specific shows for nearly 40 years;

      From 1965 - 1972, the first Tom & Jerry television series
      called "The Tom and Jerry Show" aired on CBS during Saturday
      Mornings, produced by Hanna-Barbera under license from MGM;
      this successful show lasted seven seasons;

      In 1972 episodes from the above CBS show were syndicated
      nationally for use on individual stations at various times
      in their schedule;

      In 1975 a new series of cartoons were produced for ABC
      called "The New Tom and Jerry Show"; various combinations
      with other characters over the next three seasons changed the
      title to "The Tom And Jerry/Grape Ape Show", "The Tom and
      Jerry/Grape Ape/Mumbly Show", "The Tom and Jerry Mumbly Show";

      In 1977 during the final season of the ABC show, reruns of it
      were seen on ABC Sunday Mornings under the title "The Great
      Grape Ape Show";

      In 1980 CBS produced another Saturday Morning show for a
      couple of seasons called "The Tom and Jerry Comedy Hour"
      which was also known as "The New Adventures of Tom & Jerry";

      On The Fox Network, a 1990 series was called "The Tom and
      Jerry Kids Show";

      A 1996 show was produced on the TBS (cable) Superstation
      by Turner Broadcasting which had purchased the MGM library,
      called "Tom and Jerry's Funhouse";

      A Tom and Jerry motion picture called "Tom and Jerry: The Movie"
      was produced in 1992 which got lackluster reviews ]
