McCloud (detective, starring Dennis Weaver)

    (NBC Primetime, 1970 - 1977)

    [alternate title: "Four-In-One: McCloud";
     alternate title: "NBC Mystery Movie: McCloud";

     It began as part of a rotating group of mini-series under the
     umbrella title "Four-In-One"; The others were "Night Gallery",
     "San Francisco International Airport" and "The Psychaitrist";

     The next year (1971) it was part of a rotating group of
     series aired under the umbrella title "The NBC Mystery Movie";
     The other rotating series of the "Mystery Movie" were "Columbo",
     "McMillan and Wife", "Banacek", "Cool Million" and "Madigan";

     This was Dennis Weaver's "breakout" role after he had been
     a fixture of the TV series "Gunsmoke" with James Arness for
     16 years (since 1955); In his role as a bumbling sidekick,
     Weaver was playing a semi-comic character, definitely weaker
     almost a whiner, and not a hero;

     Even though "Gunsmoke" was to continue another four years,
     Weaver left in 1971 to take this role -- four years before the
     end of "Gunsmoke"; so it is evident that Weaver saw a heroic
     title role as worth the gamble, but it must have been a very
     difficult career choice at the time; Another character was
     introduced on "Gunsmoke" -- a blacksmith played by newcomer
     Burt Reynolds;

     The McCloud character was a curious concept -- a Deputy from
     New Mexico brings himself and his techniques to Manhattan in
     supposedly temporary assigment to learn "big-city" techniques,
     but in the process contributes his own rather direct methods
     which get results but fluster his New York superiors;

     The role of Captain of Detectives was played by J.D. Cannon]
